The Manchester Evening News reported that Aston Villa intends to sign Sancho, who was abandoned by Manchester United, while Manchester United is interested in Villa goalkeeper Martin. Martinez, 31, has been eager to join Manchester United for months, but the club was decisively rejected in a loan inquiry earlier this summer. The Manchester Evening News once revealed that Manchester United is considering strengthening the goalkeeper position, and Antwerp's Senna Lamons is another target.

Rome has been the biggest favorite to sign Sancho for weeks, but failed to make breakthroughs. Sancho, 25, had previously seen Italy as the most likely way out and had negotiated with Juventus earlier this summer, but Villa has now become a potential option.

Martinez and Sancho have similar weekly wages, with the former having a weekly wage of £200,000. Sancho's weekly salary is roughly the same as the Champions League clause (the salary of a player who does not receive a Champions League qualification will be cut by 25%).

Martinez was not selected for Villa's roster defeat to Crystal Palace 0-3, and Villa coach Unai Emery admitted that Martinez was not focused. Villa has been having difficulty strengthening its lineup this summer, and he has not won the first three rounds of the Premier League.

Sancho has not played in the Premier League for Manchester United for more than two years, and Chelsea paid a £5 million liquidated damages in the summer to avoid forced buyout of Sancho after the loan period expires. The winger has the last ten months left in his contract with Manchester United, and if Sancho is still on the team, the club will almost certainly not activate the one-year renewal clause.
