Dry eye disease in dogs has been proven to be the basics of stubborn degenerative and inflammation, and cannot be completely cured. So what are the causes of dry eye disease in dogs? Only by finding the root cause can it be effectively prevented.

1. Drug causes: sulfamic ammonium drugs (some "eye drops commonly used by people") can cause dry eye disease in dogs.

2. Cause of surgery: Dry eye disease caused by surgical removal of the third eyelid gland (cherry eye).

3. Spontaneous and elderly causes: The cause of dry eye disease in dogs is related to the aging of animals and the gradual atrophy of the lacrimal glands.

4. Autoimmunity causes: Dry eye disease caused by up to 30% spontaneously is related to autoimmunity destruction of the lacrimal gland and the third eyelid gland. Among the cases of dry eye disease in the ophthalmology clinic of the National Taiwan University Animal Hospital, there is a significant and high proportion of immune abnormalities, including allergic constitution or folliculosis infection.

5. Trauma caused by trauma in the eye socket or under the eye socket: The secretion of tears becomes abnormal due to the damage caused by the trauma of the lacrimal gland and the third eyelid gland, or the nerves that control the lacrimal gland and the third eyelid gland, causing the secretion of tears to become abnormal.

6. Canine distemper: Canine distemper virus can affect the lacrimal glands and the third eyelid glands, thereby causing temporary or permanent loss of tear secretion.

If the owner suspects that his dog has canine distemper, he can use canine distemper test strips for testing. If the diagnosis is confirmed, he can give the dog antiviral treatment as soon as possible and inject the pet canine distemper virus monoclonal antibody.

7. Congenital or genetic causes: Congenital acinar hypoplasia often occurs in young or young adult dogs of mini breeds, such as Chihuahua and Yorkshire terrier.

In addition, dog breeds with genetically beneficial dry eye syndrome (but not certain age of onset), which is often related to autoimmune attack on the lacrimal gland. Dog breeds include Marcis, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu (detailed introduction), Puggo, Pekingese, Boston Terrier, Western Highland Terrier, King Charles Hound, Lhasa, British Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel and British Bulldog.

8. Craninal nerve V is caused by lack of sensory nerves on the surface of the eye.

9. Craninal nerve VII is caused by the lack of parazygotic sensory nerve.

10. Other causes: There are many unconfirmed or unknown factors that have been raised.
